Mapping celebrated Christmas 2015

The mayor of Cali celebrated Christmas 2015 with a spectacular mapping projection on its building, through which it highlighted the existing fauna in this Colombian city.

By Christie

The mayor's office building of Cali, the third most populous city in Colombia, became during the end of the year of 2015, a gigantic projection canvas to celebrate the Christmas season. Ten projectors of 20,000 lumens of the Christie J Series were used to make a spectacular mapping projection on the façade of the Municipal Administrative Center, CAM. The mapping had as protagonists 28 species of birds typical of the city.

The projection was carried out by the companies Vinilo Lab, specialist in conceptualization of emerging technologies and development of digital content, which was in charge of the technique and programming of the projection; Cacumen, in charge of the contents; and In Situ, in executive production.

These companies developed an emotional story starring the birds that recreated the experiences of the homes of Cali during the night of December 24 around the gifts, flowers and music of the region.

Twenty creatives and five producers, including designers, animators, architects, communicators and even ornithologists, worked for a year to bring the project to life. The contents were carefully elaborated with 2D and 3D animation, using a fusion of techniques in a work elaborated to scale. To recreate the sounds of birds, a bank of trills was used, as well as electronic sounds, music and effects.

The mapping lasted 15 minutes and was projected every half hour every day during the month of December. The projection surface was 50 meters wide by 48 meters high. 10 Christie Roadster HD20K-J projectors of 3DLP® technology, 20,000 center lumens and HD resolution (1920 x 1080) were used.

The projectors were located in scaffold towers on a building that was right in front of the mayor's office at a projection distance of 50 meters. The use of blending and warping was key to fitting the images precisely onto the uneven surface on which it was projected. To manage the projections, the Watchout 6.0 system was used. The total resolution was 5000 x 5000 pixels.

Eduardo Ortega, CEO of Vinilolab, is delighted with the work done: "The truth is that the mapping was a success; the mayor's office, the citizens, and in general everyone expressed their great satisfaction with this project."

And regarding the Christie projectors used, Ortega says: "Christie is a top brand that was in the sights of Vinilob since our inception for performance, support and support in the projects. And in this particular event, the projectors performed flawlessly. The remote monitoring was a great help, and we used the machines in portrait to be able to yield more pixels and more lumens for the required area. They are teams that have hardware with great software support, as well as native warping and blending tools, in short everything we need for our projects."

For María Elvira Páez, manager of In Situ, "the Christie projectors used were a guarantee of technical support and reliability and the truth is that the support of the Christie brand in this project was the icing on the cake. The result was an excellent mapping that impacted an estimated one million people among locals and visitors."
