5G technology: How will the world we know change?

5G

Latin America. The deployment of 5G infrastructure in regions around the world is currently a global trend. At the same time, most people have not yet seen all that this technology can offer. What exactly is 5G? How will it improve our lives? What are the concerns that need to be addressed before it is widely adopted?

The term 5G refers to the fifth generation of wireless communication technologies and standards and mobile networks. The most important evolution and feature is that it will offer unprecedented multi-gigabit speeds, up to 10 times more than the main fiber optic offerings on the market. In addition, it will enable the possibility of connecting more devices at a high speed, reliability and quality, and we will be able to use audio and video applications more quickly. For example, a user will be able to download movies in a matter of seconds/minutes. Second, it will usher in the next level of IoT (Internet of Things) and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) communications, because the system offers lower latency and the ability to connect multiple devices simultaneously. Now there will be high-speed connectivity, enabling new frequencies such as 28 GHz for high-capacity fixed connectivity applications.

A good example is IoT applications in the industrial world. Many facilities are located in remote locations, and most are in the process of going digital. We will have thousands of sensors and devices in every industrial facility. Therefore, they will allow the automation of all infrastructure in verticals such as: energy, water and waste management, oil and gas industry, in addition to transportation and security. The automation and control of different sectors will accelerate exponentially.

Another great advantage of 5G is that it has the potential to help close the current digital divide in the population. The current pandemic increased the need for a high-capacity connection, which crucially influences people's lives, both for the professional field with the use of multiple video calling and collaboration platforms, as well as in personal life, more specifically entertainment in the form of streaming (music, videos, etc.), gaming and triple play (voice, data and video).

However, the current situation has also shown that there are large percentages of people who do not have access to or the ability to rely on broadband services for various reasons. This is a serious problem considering that digitalization opens the door to opportunities in areas such as education, health, security and economic growth. Some of the novelties of 5G can help in this regard, either by reducing deployment and operating costs, or by improving coverage.

5G technologies and standards are being implemented in all types of systems in a cost-effective manner. That's what we do at Cambium Networks, we take these standards and then apply our innovation in products and solutions to offer them to service providers. We have solutions that offer multi gigabit capabilities in operating bands such as 6 GHz, 60 GHz, 80 GHz, soon 28 GHz, among others, which complement perfectly with the evolution offered by 5G. And we do it in an affordable way in more than 150 countries. So, we envision that in the near future these new technologies will be adopted on a broader scale, including rural or remote communities in all countries.
