RME launched its new USB audio interface with 188 channels

rme

Latin America. RME introduces Fireface UFX III, a 24-bit/192 kHz USB audio interface with 188 channels of inputs and outputs for analog and digital signals.

As the successor to the Fireface UFX+, the UFX III takes the measurement of USB interfaces to a new level: 12 analog I/O channels, 16 ADAT channels, 1 AES/EBU I/O and 2 MADI I/O with 64 channels, with MIDI, Word Clock and USB 3.0 connectivity enable unmatched variety and flexibility for professional studio use. Fireface UFX III is rounded out with innovative RME technologies, such as SteadyClock FS, TotalMix, DURec and more.

Fireface UFX III is based on a newly developed analog and digital card. While the analog card offers, for example, analog outputs coupled to DC, as well as new AD and DA converters with an improved THD+N value, the digital card also allows for exciting new features thanks to the updated high-tech components.

Comprehensive connectivity
The Fireface UFX III front panel provides four high-performance XLR/TRS combo inputs for microphone, instrument and line signals, two stereo headphone jacks with an output level of +19 dBu, MIDI I/O and a USB port. In combination with the DURec (Direct USB Recording) function, the USB port enables independent recording of selected input and output signals (up to 80 channels) on a connected USB storage medium.

The rear panel shows the full connectivity of the Fireface UFX III. In addition to other MIDI I/O, two optical ADAT I/O, one AES/EBU I/O, and eight line-level balanced analog outputs (including XLR stereo monitor outputs) are available. With the new multi-mode, the two ADAT I/Os can be used as separate optical SPDIF inputs and outputs in addition to the AES I/O.

In addition, Fireface UFX III offers an optical MADI (SC) interface with 64 bidirectional channels. Word Clock (BNC) connectors function as additional coaxial MADI input and output if needed. The Fireface UFX III is connected to the computer via USB 3.0. In compatible USB 2.0 mode, all analog and digital I/O are available, except MADI channels. The second USB port on the back panel is used to connect an optional USB ARC remote control.

Direct recording via USB
Through the DURec (Direct USB Recording) digital recording function, up to 80 inputs and outputs of the Fireface UFX III can be recorded directly to (and read from) USB storage media. Therefore, DURec uses the integrated DSP that provides independent operation without the need for a computer. Potential fields of application include independent field recordings, live and rehearsal recordings, or playback of live recordings for virtual sound testing. Automatically naming tracks in the DAW according to the names assigned in the TotalMix FX software is very convenient.

USB 3.0 Class Compliant
In addition to controller-based USB operation and standalone mode (without a computer connected), Fireface UFX III offers a Class Compliant mode for native operation with Windows, macOS, and Linux. As the first RME audio interface with full USB 3.0 support in DC mode, Fireface UFX III provides all 94 channels of driverless I/O. In addition to use with a computer, CC mode allows you to control the UFX III via the optionally available TotalMix FX iPad app.
