Latin America. Last Saturday, March 23, a new version of the Earth Hour campaign took place, which for this year was carried out under the slogan "Challenge the world, save the planet", and that in addition to turning off the lights, proposed planting trees and supporting forest conservation projects.
In most countries in which the World Wide Fund for Nature WWF, the organizing entity has a presence, the lights of monuments and public squares were turned off for an hour, as well as some buildings of private companies and homes that decided to join the campaign. All seeking to raise awareness about climate change.
The balance of participation in Latin America on the sixth day of Earth Hour was different depending on the country. In some there were additional events, as in the case of Chile, where seven bicycles of the alternative electricity generation system developed by ProteinLab of the UTEM were installed and all those who wanted to could get on pedaling. With the energy generated, a concert was held during the blackout.
For its part, Brazil reported the participation of 113 cities that joined the blackout with special events and concentrations. For Mexico, local governments teamed up with private enterprise to turn off the lights of corporate buildings and monuments. In Argentina, 28 cities participated, but in Colombia few heard about the day.
In the world, due to the time difference, the day began in Oceania with a massive participation and ended in the Cook Islands. Countries from Asia, Europe, Africa and America participated. As novelties for this year there was participation of Russia and the Red Square of Moscow, as well as the Vatican.
