Estadio Azteca debuts giant LED screens from Panasonic

Mexico. Panasonic's LED technology for giant screens was chosen by Estadio Azteca for the renovation project of the video deployment system of the historic venue located south of Mexico City. The system includes a pair of giant screens and two fascias or straps at the level of the boxes, which add up to more than 746m2 of state-of-the-art LED panels, ready to offer a new entertainment and information experience with Full HD quality.

As part of a comprehensive renovation project of the Azteca Stadium, the decision to change and expand the video screen system has as main objectives to offer a better visual experience for the attending public and provide new dissemination options for advertisers and sponsors of the different sports and artistic shows that houses the so-called Colossus of Santa Úrsula.

The Azteca Stadium already had a giant screen system, inaugurated in 1998, with phosphor panel technology, whose installation was also the responsibility of Panasonic. However, the image quality of these screens no longer corresponded to the Full HD High Definition resolution with which the current video content is generated, in addition to the risk of limited availability of the parts and accessories required to ensure their correct operation.

Panasonic de México, through its new Division of Integral B2B Solutions, was selected by the experts of the Azteca Stadium to develop a system that offered an image quality according to Full HD productions, versatility in the deployment of different contents and a reliable operation for many years.

The system was designed and approved in 2014, and its implementation began in early 2015 with shipments of the new equipment and direct transportation to the stadium facilities. The work of uninstalling the original screens and the necessary infrastructure for the placement of the new ones was in charge of the Azteca Stadium itself.

During the period from February to April 2015, the installation process, integration with the video system and content control, performance tests and final adjustments were carried out. So the system of the new giant screens will be officially inaugurated on Saturday, May 16, during the celebration of the soccer match between Club América and Club Pachuca, corresponding to the Quarterfinals of the Clausura 2015 Tournament of Mexican soccer.

Technology for the best sports venues

The LED panel technology supplied by Panasonic for the Azteca Stadium is the same that has been used in the recent installation projects of giant screens by the Japanese company.

Among these projects are the Lincoln Financial Field stadium of the Philadelphia Eagles of the NFL, the Churchill Downs Racetrack, home of the traditional Kentucky Derby, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts nascar series competitions or the different scenarios of the recent Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games and the next Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016.

The project in figures

  • Two giant screens for the South and North headers of 10.24 x 21.44 meters each.
  • Two fascias or straps on the second level of boxes of 0.96 x 160.0 meters each.
  • Use of LED technology panels with 20mm pitch.
  • Full HD image quality.
  • Software for image optimization with Virtual Resolution function and availability of multiple effects.
  • Ventilation system for air circulation.
  • The current system (2015) replaces the original phosphor panel displays that were used since 1998, also powered by Panasonic.
