Mexico. Finding a microphone to amplify an acoustic instrument, such as a violin or guitar, is never easy. But, when Los Hermanos Villalobos, one of today's most popular contemporary Mexican ensembles, went on tour, they knew precisely what they needed, and DPA Microphones' microphones provided the right solution.
After purchasing four d:vote 4099 instrumental microphones from the company, the quartet – composed of Luis, Ernesto and Alberto Villalobos on violin and Humberto Flores on guitar – has the possibility to play their traditional Mexican music with a modern twist.
Also supported by Rosa Ávila on drums and Leo Sherman on bass, Los Hermanos Villalobos first discovered d:votes three years ago, when it was decided that Flores needed an amplification method. "Coming from a classical and traditional Mexican background, we had never really amplified the violin. Once we started incorporating additional instruments and vocals, we knew we couldn't continue to use a fully acoustic sound," says Luis.
"We tested all kinds of microphones and pickups, but we were never very satisfied with the sound quality, which is the most important thing for our presentations. Then we discovered DPA. We quickly fell in love with the clarity of the microphones, their ease of use, and the ability to stay on throughout our rigorous performances, so we purchased additional microphones. The sound is so real; that we wouldn't trade it for anything."
