International. An LED lighting system from Elation Professional and ADJ participated in 20 Century Fox's new film "Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Road Chip," which had its Christmas premiere. Atlanta's Gold Room nightclub, which houses a large Elation and ADJ platform, was home to a key scene from the film in which Ashley Gris's character (Bella Thorne) and The Chipmunks sang their original song "Home."
Lighting programmer Jared Greenstein designed the space with the help of head electrician Dan Cornwall. "The club is open from Thursday to Saturday, which gave us only on Sunday to prepare what we required for that particular scene. We had a very limited planning process because of how the workflow went," Jared said. "We chose Gold Room because the site was ready and the location played well for what was described in the script. The platform gave the look we needed and saved us from having to add a bunch of accessories."
In 2014, Gold Room received a major lighting renovation that included Elation's Rayzor Q7 LED moving heads and Platinum Spot LED II heads, as well as Elation Flex Pixel Tape moving along the club's walls.
"The scene was a performance piece and the whole Elation/ADJ team was used for that reason. The Elation gear played an important role in this scene, especially the Rayzor Q7," said Jared. "We used the Platinum Spot LED II to illuminate certain areas of the crowd, as well as backlight for the actors."
He added that "certain cameras we use may be sensitive to the refresh rate of the LED. You always take a risk using LEDs because there is a good chance that the camera will take the strobe effect of the light. I was very nervous because it would be a problem but we didn't have any. It was a great relief, everything worked very well. I was very impressed with the quality and reliability of the facilities."
