International. By the end of 2013, stiff competition from smartphone manufacturers will have a new element at play, when flexible displays for these devices begin to be offered commercially.
There are two companies that have announced and shown their advances in this technology. The first was Samsung, which presented at the last version of the CES fair in January, a prototype of a cell phone with a flexible screen, based on Oled technology and the thickness of a sheet of paper. And although it does not have the flexibility to bend the latter, it does allow it to roll up.
Now, LG has joined the competition and announced that later this year it will present its first phone with a flexible kick. This was announced in statements to the media by the vice president of LG's mobile phone division, Yoon Bu-hyun.
The executive explained that the company is working hand in hand with the Korean government for the development of OLED technology, on which flexible screens are based, because they allow to achieve the necessary conditions to give flexibility, transparency and image quality in ultra high definition.
LG's announcement is the first concrete of a product that will go on mass sale with flexible screens. And although the specific features were not announced, if the reaction of Samsung is expected, it will not want to lose the leadership it has gained with the cutting-edge technology in its mobile devices.
