Data Centers Must Ensure Power Supply

Latin America. Aspects such as capacity, compliance with specific codes, ease of access for maintenance work play a crucial role in determining the energy backup solution that a critical load installation demands.

Data centers have one of the highest power availability requirements in the industry to ensure minimal or no service interruption in critical areas.

Jesús Campos, Sales Engineering Manager for Latin America at Generac, explains that data centers house the computer equipment used to process, analyze and store electronic data. Currently, he explains, many companies rely on the services that are performed within data centers to maintain their own functionality, including the daily INFRASTRUCTURE of ICT.

"The need for electronic data is growing while the need to process or access this data at all times is also increasing. Keeping these buildings available 24/7 is a necessity, not a luxury."

Guaranteeing Energy Supply
The demand for reliable uninterrupted power in data centers is now the norm. Data centers have different types of requirements because they serve different types of loads. Some of the aspects that should be considered are:
•    Given the load required, it is common for data centers to use redundant backup systems.
•    One of the main elements that make up a backup system for critical loads are the UPS's, these equipment guarantee an uninterrupted supply from the moment a failure occurs in the network and until the generator set takes the load.
•    Data centers are facilities that operate 24/7 without interruptions, ensuring a reliable power supply system is essential so that this mission is not compromised.

Campos points out that 24/7 electricity distribution systems are becoming essential for the day-to-day operations of all types of companies: "The more we demand the storage and distribution of large volumes of information, the greater the demand and the need for growth of the facilities responsible for the management of these."

The current generation of reliable electrical infrastructures has created a high level of expectations among owners and users, who are increasingly difficult to tolerate shortcomings in high-quality service for this important segment.

"The reliability and availability with which electrical distribution systems will be designed will remain on the front line for electrical designers, and these requirements are here to stay. These qualities not only determine the service that will be installed, but also have a great impact on the safety of those who operate these facilities. In addition, the increasing focus on environmental impact and optimization in energy management will continue to challenge designers during the design and sizing of equipment that will support the facilities by always offering a high level of reliability and availability. In the future, state-of-the-art power backup and distribution systems will see similarities between the loads of data centers and emergency facilities."
