International. Panasonic collaborated with its real-time tracking and projection mapping technology by using state-of-the-art compatible projectors for the production of the innovative video show presented during the "One Year to Go" ceremony.
The event, carried out by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, in conjunction with the Tokyo 2020 government, was hosted by the Tokyo International Forum and was held on July 24, just to kick off the one-year countdown and start the call for athletes from around the world to participate in the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The ceremony was attended by tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee Chairman Yoshiro Mori; tokyo governor Yuriko Koike; tokyo 2020 guests, including International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach and other dignitaries; as well as an approximate audience of 5 thousand people. In addition to the start of the countdown for the opening, the IOC's invitation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games was also presented, the design of the medals was revealed and the call for volunteers who will run with the torch was launched.
During the opening presentation, participants enjoyed an innovative video projection, full of colors and effects, which was combined with real-time tracking of the dynamic routine of a fast dancer and her complex gymnastic movements. This demonstration was a compelling reminder of Tokyo 2020's promise to deliver the most innovative Olympic Games in history.
The dance was performed by Honami Tsuboi, a Japanese rhythmic gymnast participating in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with the musical accompaniment of the Yoshida Brothers and their three-stringed shamisen instruments from the Tsugaru region of northern Japan.
Both real-time tracking and projection mapping for the representation of spatial images (uniform projection of video on various surfaces) were implemented with Panasonic's exclusive technology to project images on fast-moving objects using special projectors. Real-time tracking and mapping detect target movements and positions at high speed for smooth, low-latency projection mapping.
Panasonic's real-time mapping and tracking technology achieves the lowest latency in the industry, just 0.0016 seconds, or less than 1/10 (compared to conventional devices), between detecting an object's position and transmitting images*. Panasonic's industry-leading technology is expected to find useful applications in fields such as sports competition. (*According to research conducted by the company as of July 24, 2019.)
Satoshi Takeyasu, Director of Brand Communication (CBCO) at Panasonic Corporation, commented: "We are honoured to offer our real-time projection mapping and tracking technology at the opening presentation of tokyo 2020's 'One Year to Go' ceremony, which celebrates the city of Tokyo as host of the world's biggest sporting event. We are committed to using our innovative technologies to help Tokyo 2020 deliver the most innovative Olympic and Paralympic Games in history."
Going forward, Panasonic, the global sponsor of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, will continue to supply advanced products, technologies and solutions to share the passion and excitement of the Games with people around the world.
