Latin America. Since December 2023, all Epson Group facilities around the world are powered by renewable energy sources. This makes Epson the first company in the Japanese manufacturing industry to complete the transition to renewable energy at its facilities around the world, including in Japan.
The Epson Group, which consumes approximately 876 GWh3 of energy per year, estimates an annual reduction of around 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by sourcing renewable energy to meet this demand.
Epson publicly committed to becoming a carbon negative company and eliminating the use of exhaustible resources from the subsoil4 in its Environmental Vision 2050. The transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy is positioned as a fundamental pillar to achieve this decarbonization goal. In line with this vision, Epson announced in March 2021 its decision to switch to the exclusive use of renewable energy at all Epson Group facilities1 globally by 2023. This transition was completed in Japan in November 2021, and globally, in December 2023, meeting the established deadlines.
In addition to sourcing renewable energy, Epson will promote greater adoption of renewable energy, including by generating more of its own energy and supporting the development of new energy sources through co-creation5. Epson aims to reduce the amount of energy associated with production and products, seeking innovations in the circulation of resources to achieve carbon negative enterprise.
Measures taken to transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy at all Epson Group facilities1:
March 2021: Epson publicly announces its commitment to transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy across all its facilities.
April 2021: Transition is completed at all local facilities in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
November 2021: Transition is completed across all facilities in Japan.
December 2023: Transition is completed across all facilities globally.
"For eight decades, Epson has demonstrated a proactive approach to environmental action. We have maintained the founder's commitment to preserving the cleanliness of nearby Lake Suwa, and have become the first company in the world to eliminate CFCs from our production processes. Today, we have successfully completed the transition to the exclusive use of renewable energy across all Epson Group facilities in just two years and ten months since we announced our initial commitment in 2021. Not only does this achievement contribute to our own goals, but it also seeks to encourage greater adoption of renewable energy in society by raising awareness. Our goal of achieving social sustainability is a complex issue, fraught with difficulties, but we will act decisively to address the challenges in a spirit of creativity," said Executive Chairman Yasunori Ogawa.
