2015 International Year of Light

Mexico. 2015 is a year dedicated to celebrating the existence and importance of light in the life of the planet. Unesco declared it the International Year of Light in order to raise awareness around the world about the value of light and lighting in educational, scientific, technical, artistic, social, among others. Without light, great technological, medical and scientific advances would not have been possible, much less artistic expressions that through it generate discourses.

This year, millions of people who are part of the scientific community, the artistic community, educational institutions, technological groups, for-profit and non-profit companies and more, will participate in this event that aims to communicate through multiple activities the meaning of light in everyday life and raise awareness about what this resource can do for us.

Mexico plays a very important role in this celebration, since it was this country that presented the resolution of the International Year of Light, IYL 2015 during the Second Committee of the United Nations on November 6, 2013, with the support of 35 countries among which are Argentina, South Korea, Spain, Morocco, Nicaragua, New Zealand and Ukraine. Unam and Philips, official sponsor of IYL 2015, are Mexican participants who will collaborate in the realization of activities around this great event.

The inauguration of IYL 2015 took place on 19 and 20 January in Paris, the official headquarters of UNESCO. Through conferences, workshops, art installations and many other activities, it is intended not only to educate people about this topic, but also to celebrate that we have a resource that gives life: light.
