Chile. The Chilean audiovisual engineering company Proyección de Ideas (PI) carried out an amazing projection mapping on two cars at the official launch in Chile of the new BMW i3 and i8 models. Christie's six 1DLP technology projectors and the Christie Spyder X20 video processor brought the vehicles to life in an experience filled with movement and visual effects.
In the facilities of its new corporate building in Santiago de Chile, BMW made the official launch of its i3 (electric Citycar) and i8 (first plug-in hybrid sports car) models, the same ones that mark the birth of the new "i" sub-brand, which encompasses the development of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, sustainable, and with a premium finish. It was a private event, where BMW invited its closest suppliers and customers, in total about 100 people.
The production company Altavisión, responsible for the event, brought the client a proposal to map on the cars themselves, whose concept started from highlighting the design of these new vehicles and emphasizing their new technology. For this, he turned to PI, an audiovisual company based in Santiago de Chile that has been making the most spectacular mappings and monumental projections in the country for more than 10 years.
PI carried out meticulous pre-production work that included the study of the architecture of the place and the visual angle of the spectators, focusing on the shooting position of each projector. The projection was made on the two vehicles and on the background of them, occupying a total area of 9.15 meters long by 3 high. Some projectors were located on the roof and others were arranged frontally, all of them installed in truss structures.
The audiovisual content projected on the vehicles was developed by PI and consisted mainly of abstract elements that allowed to highlight the design line of the cars. In turn, on the background were projected settings, videos and information of the new cars. The videomapping lasted approximately four minutes and was repeated several times throughout the day. The resolution was 1920 x 1080p and the aspect ratio was 16:9.
The projectors used were the Christie DHD800, which belong to Christie's line of 1DLP technology projectors and are ideal for fixed installations and live events. They have HD 1920x1080 resolution and 8000 ANSI lumens. The optics used were 1.2-1.8:1.
"The DHD800 offers us a high quality projection and allows us to work quickly and with great versatility, especially in enclosed spaces," says Marco Gajardo, CTO of Idea Projection. "Their weight and size are very friendly, which is ideal for projecting in complex places."
He adds: "Among its functions is the use of lens shift, blending and zoom that make us able to make adjustments with greater precision, something that is fundamental to our high quality requirements in all our projects. The truth is that we can trust its operation 100%. And in this particular event we took their performance to the maximum and their performance was unmatched."
To launch the contents, two mamboPlayers were used, the media server developed by the software engineering department of Proyección de Ideas. A Christie Spyder X20 video processor was also used for signal distribution and to incorporate a CCTV.
