OLED market to reach $5.9 trillion in 2015

According to a recent study by Nanomarkets LC, a firm that tracks and analyzes the opportunities of emerging electronics markets based in Glen Allen, Virginia, United States, the OLED lighting market will reach 4.5 trillion dollars by 2013 and grow to 5.9 trillion by 2015. This firm said that the previous year the prototypes of this technology had great developments to improve the performance and manufacture of them. More information on this report can be found on the www.nanomarkets.net website.

Some findings of the study indicate that the unit cost of OLED lights will still be higher than that of traditional lighting systems, but this monetary surplus is offset by the longer life and efficiency of this technology. In this regard, it is noted that during the current year the lifetime of OLEDs increased from 24 Khrs to 100 Khrs; Likewise, the U.S. Department of Energy expects OLED lighting to reach an efficiency of 150 lm/w in 2012, rather than in 2014, as initially planned. Nanomarkets believes that these and other OLED improvements will lead the overall lighting market to revenue of $2.3 trillion by 2015.

The manufacturing process of OLEDs has also progressed significantly; GE and the Fraunhofer Institute have demonstrated mass manufacturing techniques of this technology that will lead in the future to a significant improvement in the manufacturing costs of these devices. Low-cost printing and new small molecules will also help trigger OLEDs in the backlight market. Nanomarkets expects this market to reach $1.1 trillion by 2015. And although the first OLED panels are quite small, the recent escalation of factories in Asia to build large OLED screens will undoubtedly benefit the infrastructure of the technology and will lead to the development of larger panels in the coming years.

The flat and flexible format presented by OLEDs makes it possible  to design lighting fixtures with added value for luxury consumers and specialized architects. During 2008, lighting designer Ingo Maurer introduced the world to OLED's first "working table lamp" and GE researchers are targeting luminous curtains and luminous wallpaper. By 2015 Nanomarkets projects that sales of OLED architecture and specialized industrial lighting will reach $1.9 trillion.

The nanomarkets report, called OLED Lighting Market 2008, provides a comprehensive analysis of the business opportunities for OLED lighting used for backlighting, general lighting, specialized lighting for architecture, vehicle lighting, signage applications, among others. It also includes a detailed 8-year prediction of those markets, as well as strategic profiles of all the leading brands in this emerging technology, in addition to the activities of projects sponsored by the governments of the United States and Europe.

For its part, the research firm, Nanomarkets, bases its research work on the developments of new advanced materials for electronics. At the same time, he has published numerous reports related to printable, organic and thin electronic materials and applications, as well as having the blog www.nanotopblog.com for consultations.
