International. For protection and safety for police officers whose mission is to control demonstrations, avoiding hand-to-hand contact has become vitally important. They started using pressurized water, but now they also have the sound for this purpose.
With the support of U.S. law enforcement, sound engineers developed a long-range acoustic device, LRAD, which sends sound waves causing severe pain to those in the wave's zone of influence.
According to US media, this equipment has not been officially recognized by the US police, but there is already a known history of being used since 2009 in different cities in that country.
The sound cannon, as it begins to be called, affects people who are less than 100 meters away, causing them strong pain and subsequent headaches thanks to the fact that it emits a sound of 150 decibels. Some people have even reported that they have suffered permanent injuries to their hearing after being victims of this equipment.
This equipment can be installed, both in police cars and in energy towers or public lighting to reach a greater range. As it has transpired, the new models allow to direct the sound ray with little dispersion.
Although they have not officially confirmed it, it is assured that several countries already use the equipment to control the demonstrations, in the case of Latin America Chile is spoken of as one of the first to acquire it.
