International. For the first time a movie theater installs digital laser projectors permanently. Cinerama cinemas in Seattle acquired a 4K laser digital projector from Christie, with light emission scalable up to 60,000 lumens.
This is the first such projector sale to be made after Christie received U.S. FDA approval allowing the sale of laser projectors for use in movie theaters, constituting the first and only approval to date for a manufacturer of DCI-compatible cinema projectors.
After announcing the negotiation, Greg Wood, director of Cinerama, said that "the selection of a laser projection solution, with its ability to display 2D and 3D films with surprising clarity and a bright and accurate color reproduction, remains in line with the tradition of keeping the technological forefront."
The technological renovation began last August with the technical evaluations and the replacement of conventional digital projection by Christie's latest digital cinema laser projector planned for early next year.
Jack Kline, president and COO of Christie Digital Systems USA, Inc., said, "Our latest projector will allow Cinerama to take the audience experience to the next level. A laser projector is an important investment for any cinema and this election is a great vote of confidence for us."
He added that Christie plans to introduce a wide range of laser projectors built on cutting-edge technologies and architectures in order to power applications for the digital cinema, pro AV, visualization and simulation markets in the remainder of the year.
