International. Solid State Logic released the Pre VHD pre-module for the modular 500 format rack platform. The launch makes the VHD-based Duality preamp technology available to studios of all sizes.
The VHD Pre is an immensely versatile processing and recording device. It can provide supremely clean SSL SuperAnalogue recordings but also features a switchable VHD mode. SSL's VHD (Variable Harmonic Drive) system uses a 100% analog signal path to generate rich harmonic distortion. As the VHD input gain increases, the Variable Harmonic Drive process introduces either the second or third harmonic distortion or a combination of the two to its source material.
At low gains it adds a smooth warmth to the valve style, or a bit of the transistor touch. As the gain increases the more extreme is the distortion until at high levels of gain delivers a fierce transcistor-esco grunge. The VHD Pre gives the user the maximum versatility of a pre-size for studies. Whether it's traditional ultra-clean SSL, a sutile warmth, or dirty transistor distortion, VHD will change your expectations about what a preamp should deliver.
The VHD Pre module section has three rotary controls: a Drive control that selects between the 2nd harmonic distortion or the 3rd harmonic distortion or a combination of continuous variation between the two. A gain control of +20/+75dB sets the entry level. A trim control of -20/+20dB adjusts the output level from the circuit to allow levels to be equalized with other devices, since by its nature the VHD circuit can significantly increase signal levels.
