Latin America. 5G Americas released the 5G Services and Use Cases report, which presents industry insights into 5G technology and addresses new trends in a wide range of use case categories and business models with disparate technical requirements and maps them against 5G capabilities.
Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas, observed, "To make the transformation of the 5G industry a reality, close collaboration between use case developers, vertical industries and 5G system designers is needed to maximize impact and ensure beneficial outcomes for all parties."
As a first step in establishing these connections and beginning the necessary cooperation, the 5G Americas report identifies new trends in different categories of use cases, outlines their technical requirements and maps them against the capabilities of 5G.
"While 5G technology is anticipated to provide some tools to meet the growing demand for cellular services, 5G technology is also anticipated to generate even more demand by expanding connectivity capabilities and improving mobile access," commented Chris Pearson. "It is anticipated that 5G technology will be able to offer a platform for innovation, which will help transform vertical industries, improve efficiency and functionality, expand economic productivity and impact almost every aspect of society."
Mobile network operators will have new opportunities; however, they also face deployment challenges to support new wireless services cost-effectively. For example, mobile broadband requires a significant increase in capacity in a macro-scale coverage area. At the same time, sites in close proximity along highways are needed to support connected vehicles and accompany the process in which the smart car becomes even smarter as part of the evolution towards fully autonomous vehicles.
Drones will also require communications coverage at different heights that will support a new level of mobility. Internet of Things devices and sensors need deeper coverage to extend range and improve battery life. It is critical to understand how to build the mobile network in the future to support these and a multiplicity of additional use cases.
This 5G Americas white paper explores the opportunities and challenges involved in deploying 5G networks and the impact of regulatory and policy decisions at various levels of government. 5G Americas notes that it is vital for the cellular industry to secure a sufficient amount of licensed spectrum to enable the intended use cases for 5G technology and ensure that there are regulatory frameworks that facilitate the development and deployment of infrastructure to meet the growing demand for cellular services.
The work of 5G Americas 5G Services and Use Cases captures the various aspects of 5G technology and the role it will play in multiple sectors.
