Brazil. During the last 25 years, more than 10 thousand people have passed through the classrooms of IAV, the first technical training institute aimed at the audiovisual industry in Brazil. AVI LATINOAMÉRICA spoke with Marcelo Claret, director of IAV, to learn about the history of these 25 years and how the celebration will be during the month of August:
AVI: Where did the idea of founding IAV come from?
Marcelo Claret: In 1983, I became interested in sound and looked for a place to study. I didn't find anything in Brazil. Then I just went to the university of Engineering and then Communication. But none taught me what I wanted to learn. Then I did like almost everyone at that time: I went to the market to work with what I had of knowledge.
With the passage of time I realized that it was not only me who had deficiencies in audio training. At the time when Brazil needed a school with a professionalizing course, because the market was growing a lot (remember that Rock in Rio began in 1985) and certainly would not be sustained with disqualified professionals.
AVI: What are the areas in which you train BTI?
Marcelo Claret: The IAV has as its main course the Fundamentals of Audio and Acoustics with 300 hours. Normally this course is done in two modes: Regular with 5 months duration, 3 hours a day and intensive with 5 weeks duration and 9 hours a day. The latter is intended precisely for those who come from other states or other countries to study at the IAV. We have already received students from Colombia, Mexico, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Sweden, Australia and Portugal, among others.
In addition to this course we have several specializations such as: Operation in Digital Tables, Mix in The Box, Music Production Methodologies, Music Business, Direct Sound Capture, Effects for Mixing, Practical Recording, Logic, Pro Tools, Development, Configuration and Alignment of Sound Systems and soon we inaugurate the practical course of Assembly of Live Sound Systems.
AVI: How many have been the straight ones that you have overcome in these 25 years?
Marcelo Claret: The main challenges were economic. We went through at least 4 major crises in Brazil and the huge variations in the dollar made it very difficult for us to acquire new equipment.
AVI: How many people have graduated in these 25 years?
Marcelo Claret: In those 25 years, more than 10,000 students have already passed through the IAV.
AVI: Tell me about the AV infrastructure that IAV has for training?
Marcelo Claret: We have the only classroom in Brazil with acoustic treatment, 4 recording studios, Classroom with individual systems for practical classes, Digital Tables Laboratory, DAWs Laboratory, Library, seven Review stations with video recorded classes, one that has become one of the largest in the history of music.
AVI: What is the reason for the link with the InfoComm Brazil expo?
Marcelo Claret: We have been invited by the organization to participate in the event, since the IAV has a large number of professionals trained in the area of AV and that we believe is one of the target audiences of the event.
AVI: What will the celebration of 25 years of BTI be like?
Marcelo Claret: We will do a great event in commemoration in the month of August, with the special participation of the NGO Meninos do Morumbi, banda Rastapé, the Old Friends group, in addition to others that are still to be confirmed. In the prize event of a mixing contest that we will launch soon and more some surprises.
We will also do a Masterclass of all the assembly, alignment and mixing of the event, including the live recording on multitrack.
