Latin America. DTS, introduced DTS:X for Bitstream Immersive Audio (IAB). The addition of DTS:X for IAB adds the extraordinary and immersive sound of DTS:X to more content and a wider audience in cinemas around the world.
The society of Film and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standardized immersive audio bitstream ensures that a single IAB digital cinema package (DCP) can be operated in cinemas that support IAB sound, reducing the number of mixes and masterings that content owners must perform.
This leads to more simplified distribution and DCP management in theaters, allowing studios and content creators to reduce the number of audio versions needed for a single movie title. DTS:X for IAB complies with the IAB specification ST 2098-2, as published by the SMPTE. Movies with an immersive soundtrack can be played in any theater that has DTS:X for IAB, making more immersive content available to distributors.
"DTS:X for IAB continues to position DTS:X as the leader in the audio industry in film," said Loren Nielsen, Vice President of Content Relations and Strategy at Xperi. "IAB opens the door to expanding the adoption of DTS:X in theaters and plays a critical role in enabling studios to reduce their mixing and mastering versions of titles. DTS:X for IAB also supports high frame rate (HFR) content."
DTS:X processing for IAB is available on multiple devices through Xperi's former partner GDC Technology and new vendor Cinionic. DTS:X devices for IAB include GDC SX-4000, GDC SX-4000X, GDC SR-1000X, and Barco APX. The implementation of DTS:X for IAB has begun with several test sites capable of playing DTS:X for IAB in cinemas in Hong Kong, Singapore and France, with plans for more cinemas to soon transition to DTS:X for IAB.
The DTS:X processor implementation for IAB supports all elements of the SMPTE 2098-2 IAB specification. DTS has also developed an IAB validation application capable of testing compliance with ST 2098-2 and IAB Profile 1.
