International. For the fifth consecutive year, Earth Hour is being promoted for next March 31, an initiative that seeks to turn off the lights for an hour, between 8:30 and 9:30 at night in each country.
Several Latin American countries are already working to promote Earth Hour in 2012. Among them are Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, whose governments announced that the lights of public spaces such as government buildings and monuments will be turned off.
In this way, it seeks to raise awareness about climate change and the need to change consumption habits that are harmful or affect the environment. For this year, the campaign has the slogan "Challenge the world, save the planet".
According to data from the organizers, in the last 20 years the carbon footprint has increased 11 times due to the production of energy from oil, gas or coal, the use of cars and the excessive use of electricity.
The initiative of the World Wide Fund for Nature, WWF, which maintains that it is possible to meet the world's energy needs from renewable energies by 100% before 2050, achieved that in 2011 around 1.8 billion people participated and blackouts were registered in about 5,000 cities in 135 countries.
