International. Shure's wireless audio technology was present at the 2022 Super Bowl, both on and off the field. On the biggest stage in American football, with 70,000 fans present at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and more than 100 million viewers worldwide, RF coordinators, referees and renowned artists once again trusted Shure's teams.
The Axient Digital Wireless System was the solution of choice to ensure clear, uninterrupted audio at the most significant moments of the game, including the pre-show, halftime musical performances and crucial referee decisions. Off the field, Shure's technology was used to bring memorable live events to life, such as budweiser's Super Bowl Music Festival and the NFL Honors broadcast.
"Shure Axient Digital has been the key wireless system of the Super Bowl for the past 5 years," said Gary Trenda, Senior RF Technician at Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), hired by ATK Audiotek to handle the wireless microphones and IEM systems for the pregame show, for halftime performance and for the referees. "The PWS team used the Quadversity antenna system which provides great coverage. Seeing the five bars on the meter, anywhere in the field, gave us confidence in the Axient Digital system."
Gary and the ATK Audiotek team used ten four-channel AD4Q wireless receivers and a Spectrum Manager with Wireless Workbench to efficiently and continuously evaluate the RF spectrum in the SoFi stadium in real time. ATK used Axient Digital with Quadversity, a technology patented by Shure, leveraging four simultaneous RF inputs to power a single RF channel. Quadversity can extend the coverage area of a microphone channel or enable multiple coverage areas with additional antenna inputs, which is perfect for complex RF environments such as SoFi Stadium.
Singing on a custom chrome Axient Digital ADX2FD transmitter microphone with a KSM9 capsule, country music artist Mickey Guyton kicked off the pre-Super Bowl show with an emotional rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner." Mickey trusts Shure both on tour and in the studio. R&B artist Jhené Aiko gave a moving rendition of "America the Beautiful" using an ADX2FD transmitter with a KSM9 microphone capsule. Also Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson gave the introduction to the match with an ADX2 transmitter and a KSM9 capsule.
During halftime, iconic rapper and entrepreneur Snoop Dogg took the stage wielding a gold-plated ADX2 transmitter microphone customized with a KSM9 capsule and used the Shure SE215 Sound-Isolating™ in-ear monitors. All of the show's midtime Super Bowl artists relied on Shure's PSM® 1000 personal in-ear monitoring systems and category-leading 41 Shure P10R wireless bodypacks to deliver total audio quality throughout the performance.
In addition, the referees had Axient Digital ADX1 bodypacks in combination with Premium Subminiature TwinPlex® subminiature superlap microphones model TL47 from Shure. While omnidirectional lapel microphones are typically used in controlled audio environments, such as theaters, the TwinPlex is particularly suitable for this type of stadium application.
"Because of its extremely reliable and stable sound, TwinPlex was an excellent choice for referees," said Jack Bowling, FOH engineer for the 2022 Super Bowl. "Our team relied on TwinPlex and Axient Digital to achieve high-quality audio from the referees both live and in broadcast."
ATK/Versacom, a leading provider of wireless intercom services, equipped production staff with 30 Shure BRH441M production headsets for pre-match week, pre-game shows, halftime and post-game shows. All teams, from staging to audio, lighting and video, experienced seamless two-way communication thanks to the comfort and audio clarity of the BRH441M during every minute of the preparation and execution of the 56th edition of the Super Bowl.
Even before fans arrived at SoFi Stadium, Shure's technology had already provided an industry-leading sound for Budweiser's Super Bowl Music Festival concert series at the Crypto.com Arena. In this event participated artists such as Machine Gun Kelly, with a personalized pink ADX2 transmitter microphone with an SM58 capsule, Halsey, Gwen Stefani, Green Day, Mickey Guyton, among others. All of these artists also use Axient Digital both in their Super Bowl performances, and in their iconic performances during tours.
