International. At Philips' main high-density lamp manufacturing plant, which is located in Belgium, a quarter of the workers will be laid off because production will be brought to China.
According to the company, almost 400 of the 1,500 jobs that currently exist will be reduced between 2013 and 2014. One of the main reasons for this decision is that the pressure on the market of this type of lamps and the fall in prices.
This is a new decision of the company as part of the strategy to overcome the problems brought by the economic crisis that directly affects European countries, so it will take a part of the production to China.
This decision was rejected by the workers of the company and the trade unions, who pointed out that this had been reached due to the mismanagement of the directives of the Belgian plant.
But this situation is not new, since the company's management had announced in the middle of the year that about 200 jobs would be eliminated and the last announcement doubled the initial figure.
