International. For the production of the digital audio of the soundtrack of the action film of Sony Pictures, Elysium, one of the successes of this summer in the United States, a ProTools HDX workstation of the company Avid was used.
The film's soundtrack pieces were composed by Ryan Amon, and John Rodd (pictured) was a recording and mixing engineer. Avid stressed that large productions such as Elysium require advanced editing tools capable of withstanding the demands of complex mixtures, in which a very large number of tracks are handled.
Rodd considered that the speed and pure power of Pro Tools| HDX, along with the workflow it provides, were crucial factors for Elysium's successful recording at Abbey Road Studios and its subsequent mixing at its studio, Clearstory Sound. The HDX system facilitated the overall recording, editing and mixing process.
Rodd said: "The system allows me to share, edit and mix audio quickly and efficiently, while optimizing my workflows. With a single system I can make incredibly elaborate mixes of the score music and at the same time, make several stems in one pass."
Avid has teamed up with Rodd to produce a series of four-part videos about professional mixing. In "Pro Mixing Without Limits: John Rodd," Rodd talks about how to stay ahead of the curve in the industry, how he used Pro Tools| HDX at Elysium and how to collaborate with colleagues around the world. The video series can be viewed on the Avid website.
