International. Fixed broadband networks could be in jeopardy if the necessary measures are not taken to deal with the increase in video consumption, which will grow significantly by 2020. These are the results of a study by Bell Labs, the research division of Alcatel-Lucent.
This increase, which will be marked by the massification of smartphones and tablets, will make the United States go from 4.8 hours a day that a person consumes of video to seven in the United States by 2020. In addition, there will be a 12-fold growth in online video content or cloud services.
This consumption of video will be linked to video on demand content will have a leading role in the coming years. They will go from 33% to 70% per year of reference, this means that traditional television has a greater challenge to not lose that market.
"Delivering video from the cloud and from content delivery networks to tablets, TVs and smartphones is an exciting opportunity for new revenue from communications service providers, but this will only be possible if they are prepared," said Alcatel-Lucent Chief Technical Officer Marcus Weldon.
Another factor that will increase internet consumption is IP networks. According to Bell Labs, the concentration of telephony, television and internet services in IP networks in homes will generate greater pressure, since this way the provision of the service is more efficient but users demand faster networks as consumption increases.
Marcus Weldon concludes: "This research clearly reveals that the frontier of both fixed and mobile IP networks offers the greatest opportunity to improve network performance. At the same time, it is also the greatest source of risk if not properly managed."
